To get to Huanchaco you will need to take a bus or plane to Trujillo first.

Airlines that operate to Trujillo are:
LATAM, SKY, and JetSmart.

Recommendable bus companies are:
Cruz del Sur, Oltursa, ITTSA, TRC Express and Línea . They offer similar quality at similar prices. If you book a 160 degrees or 180 degrees seat, you’ll likely have a very modern bus.
The trip is about 9 hours in the night, and about 10-11 hours in the day. Most people opt for the night bus, but companies like Línea and Cruz del Sur also have comfortable day buses.

BEWARE: Insist on finding a bus from Huaraz as late as possible. A 9.30pm bus will arrive to Trujillo around 5am!!

–  Taxi from Trujillo

At most bus stations there are special ‘taxis de confianza’. These are registered, safe taxis and may cost a few soles more. A taxi from Trujillo with a reliable taxi should cost around 25-30 soles. Popular apps are InDrive and UBER, and in that case the price will be around 20-25 soles.

There are numerous public buses (‘micros’) and vans (‘combis’) driving constantly between Trujillo and Huanchaco.

Public transport is operative between 5am and 9pm. A ride between Trujillo and Huanchaco can take between half an hour to an hour and costs 2.50 soles. Be aware of the fact that normally local people do nót take large pieces of luggage in these buses. Bus employees dó take in backpackers with their backpacks though and do not charge an extra fee for it. We recommend only using these buses if you travel light. Very big backpacks or suitcases will make for an awkward situation.

From many bus terminals including the ones of Cruz del Sur, Oltursa, CIVA, Emtrafesa, ITTSA, Línea and TRC Express a public bus to Huanchaco is passing by at about a block away.

From Terrapuerto / Terminal Terrestre there is nó bus to Huanchaco. The nearest Huanchaco bus passes over roundabout Grau (Ovalo Grau) at 2km away. You could exit Terrapuerto, cross the road, and ask any bypassing bus if they can drop you at Ovalo Grau. That would be a few minutes ride only, and cost no more than 1-2 soles.
The area around Terrapuerto is not considered very safe in early morning or nighttime. Most people opt to take a taxi.

–  Finding ATMA in Huanchaco

When coming by public bus to Huanchaco, ask to be dropped for ‘El Boqueron’ (the part of Huanchaco we are in). You can tell the driver you need to be at Big Ben Restaurant. It depends on the bus how close to the hostel you can get. It should only be a small walk from where you get dropped. A general rule is to walk to the sea front and then look out for restaurant Big Ben first. Just north of Big Ben you will find Calle Ricardo Palma and the hostel will be visible from the beach.
